Natural remedies for heartburn in pregnancy

Enjoy the pregnancy they said.

Currently 35 weeks and 1 day pregnant as I type… but who’s counting. I really truly can’t wait to meet this little guy but, oh boy, saying that he is making things a little difficult for myself is an understatement.

Amongst all the other things, I have been experiencing some serious heartburn symptoms, which didn’t come too much as a surprise because I had them with Sydney and tend to suffer it also while not pregnant.

If you are not familiar with it, heartburn is that not-so-much burning sensation in your stomach and chest, that goes all the way up to the throat.

I know I am not alone, in fact, according to Pregnancy Birth and Baby a whopping 8 in 10 pregnant mums-to-be experience indigestion and heartburn at some stage of their pregnancy.

 Yet, this doesn’t make my heartburn feel any better.

Any medical professional will likely recommend smaller meals more often and to avoid fatty/greasy food, fizzy drinks, spicy foods and caffeine.

If like me, you’ve ticked the ‘All the above’ box, but still have had not much success, the next thing your GP might recommend is some over the counter medication.

However, in my instance, I got to a point where I have been taking so many things to ease my hyperemesis gravidarum symptoms, that the last thing I want to do is to take one more medication, so I’ve decided that I will stick to natural remedies only.

Here is a list with my personal favourites:

– Sleeping on the left side… as you probably know, later in pregnancy you should sleep on your sides only regardless, favoring the left one;

– Hot caffeine-free drinks, such as chamomile and peppermint team;

– Crackers, Ritz are my go-to!;

– Sleeping with head elevated, I am using a pregnancy pillow on top of my regular pillow;

– Warm milk with some honey.

Obviously some days are worse than others, but I hope you find this helpful and I’d love to hear from you if you have any other tip 🙂
